When you buy any type of fabric by the yard you are actually buying is by the "linear yard."Â Â Nobody calls it this but its true.
Its like buying rope by the foot.  You pay for the length you want.   Its the same with fabric.

A yard is 36 inches.
If the width of the fabric is 54 inches, and you purchase 1 yard, the piece of fabric that you should expect to arrive will be 36x54.
If you buy 2 yards of the same item you will recieve a piece that is 54x72.
If you buy 5 yards of the same item, you will recieve a piece that is 54x180 inches.
