does nylon shrink
Does nylon shrink? In most cases, very little. Nylon is a synthetic fiber that holds its shape well in cool or warm water, which is a big reason sewists choose it for activewear, linings, bags, and outerwear. Heat is the exception. Because nylon is a thermoplastic, high temperatures can soften the fibers and cause slight shrinkage, puckering, or a permanent change in texture.
What Causes Nylon Shrinkage
Nylon shrinkage usually comes from a hot dryer or a hot iron rather than the wash itself. Blends behave differently, too. A nylon blend with cotton or other natural fibers may shrink more than pure nylon, so always check the fiber content before you cut.
How to Wash and Dry Nylon
- Wash in cool or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle.
- Air dry or tumble dry on low heat.
- Press on a low setting with a pressing cloth.
- Pre-wash yardage the same way you will launder the finished project.
Will Nylon Shrink in the Dryer?
It can if the heat is high, so keep the setting low to protect both size and finish.
