is nylon fabric waterproof
Is nylon fabric waterproof? On its own, not quite. Nylon fibers absorb very little water and dry fast, so a tightly woven nylon naturally sheds light rain. That makes it water-resistant, but water can still push through the weave under pressure. True waterproof performance comes from what is added to the fabric.
How Nylon Becomes Waterproof
Most waterproof nylon fabric gets its protection from a coating or laminate applied to one or both sides:
- PU coated nylon: a polyurethane layer that blocks water, common for bags, covers and tarps.
- Silnylon: nylon coated with silicone, popular for lightweight tents and tarps.
- DWR finish: a durable water repellent treatment that makes water bead up and roll off.
What to Look For When You Shop
Check the product description for the coating type, the weave (ripstop nylon resists tears well) and any listed water resistance rating. Remember that stitching creates holes, so seams in rain gear or shelters usually need seam tape or sealant.
