Marine / Boat Cushion Foam
When it comes to redoing the cushions on your boat, there is alot to consider. Hopefully the information below will make it a little easier.
The first thing you need to know is there there are three basic types of foam you need to pick from, and each has its own problems and strengths.
#1. RETICULATED FOAM: This foam is the most expensive of the group. It looks like swiss cheese and if you pour water on it, that water will run through it very quickly. This foam is only ever purchase for the cockpit of a boat that is uncovered and likely to take waves or rain. This foam type is not known for having the longest life span / years of "bounce back" But its the standard in the sailing community because your cushions wont get water logged.
#2. POLY FOAM This is simply normal foam that your sofa at home is made of. It lasts for years but when it gets wet, it will hold onto water for much longer. Many many boat companies make their exterior cushions from this type of foam but they go to great lengths to cover the foam to prevent water intrushion. This type of foam is ALWAYS used for the interior of a boat but for the exterior you will want to cover it in a trash bag or nylon layer that lives under your upholstery in order to shed water more effectively. For any seating area that is also a sleeping area, we suggest 35lb foam, anything else will feel like you are sleeping on a brick.
#3. FIBER FOAM Fiber foam is the low cost alternative in the seating industry and we are one of the only ones who offer it in sheets. Fiber foam is the product you will see inside of lower cost patio furniture purchased from a big box store or wayfair. The advantage to this product is that was flows through it very well and it is comfortable. It tends to compress a little more than foam, so anything less than 3" will not be as comfortable as poly foam on your fanny. We suggest 3 to 4 inches for benches. It is also soft enough to sleep on. The down side of this product is that it does not have the life span / bounce back of poly foam. That said, if you use your boat on the weekends, its going to be just fine! If you live on your boat, you might want something that will last longer.
