how much dacron to wrap foam
Figuring out how much Dacron to wrap foam is easier than it looks. Measure your foam, apply one quick formula, and you will buy the right amount of polyester batting the first time, with no awkward gaps and no wasted yardage.
The Simple Dacron Formula
Most cushions get wrapped over the top, around the front edge, and under the bottom, ending at the back. Use these measurements:
- Length: (foam depth × 2) + (foam thickness × 2)
- Width: foam width, or foam width + (thickness × 2) if you also want the sides covered
Add an inch or two to each measurement for trimming room.
Quick Example
A 22" wide × 22" deep × 4" thick seat cushion needs about 52" of length (44" + 8"). For the width, plan on 22", or about 30" with the sides wrapped. Multiply by the number of cushions, then compare the total to the roll width you are buying.
Choosing the Right Batting
Dacron wrap softens foam edges, fills out the cover, and helps fabric slide on smoothly. Lighter loft suits tailored, crisp cushions, while thicker loft adds a plush, rounded look.
