Seat Cushion / Seat Foam

seat cushion foam is an essential material for improving comfort and restoring support in a wide range of seating applications. It is commonly used in home furniture, automotive interiors, office chairs, and custom upholstery projects where comfort and durability are important. High quality foam helps maintain proper shape and long lasting seating performance.

When choosing seat foam, it is important to consider density, firmness, and thickness to match different usage needs. Softer foam is ideal for decorative seating, while firmer options provide better support for everyday use. This makes it suitable for both replacement and new furniture construction.

For repair projects, seat cushion foam replacement is a practical solution to restore worn out cushions without replacing the entire furniture piece. It helps extend the life of sofas, chairs, and benches while improving comfort and appearance.

In many applications, foam for seat cushions offers flexibility and easy customization. It can be cut and shaped to fit different designs, making it ideal for DIY projects and professional upholstery work.

Overall, seat cushion foam provides reliable comfort, strong support, and versatile usage, making it a key material for furniture restoration and custom seating design projects.

#1. RETICULATED FOAM: This foam is the most expensive of the group. It looks like swiss cheese and if you pour water on it, that water will run through it very quickly. This foam is only ever purchased for use when you expect the cushion to get rained on. A lower cost alternative is our Fiber Foam, described below.

#2. POLY FOAM This is the normal foam that your sofa at home is made of. It lasts for years but when it gets wet, it will hold onto water for much longer. (SEE BELOW FOR QUALITY AND FIRMNESS GUIDANCE)

#3. FIBER FOAM Fiber foam is the low cost alternative in the seating industry and we are one of the only ones who offer it in sheets. Fiber foam is the product you will see inside of lower cost patio furniture purchased from a big box store or wayfair. The advantage to this product is that was flows through it very well and it is comfortable. It tends to compress a little more than foam, so anything less than 3" will not be as comfortable as poly foam on your fanny. We suggest 3 to 4 inches for benches. It is also soft enough to sleep on. The down side of this product is that it does not have the life span / bounce back of poly foam. That said, if you use your boat on the weekends, its going to be just fine! If you live on your boat, you might want something that will last longer.

#4. A LITTLE MORE PLUMP: Do you just need to give an old foam cushion a new life? Consider saving money and adding dacron badding to it. Search our site for Dacron or Batting. We have this product in 0.5 inch to 2.5 inches thick. But you can also layer it to get whatever thickness you need.

HOW TO PICK THE CORRECT FOAM

We sell a variety of foam. When you look on our website you will see a four digit number used as a descriptor, below is a break down of what those numbers mean in terms of quality and firmness. As always, we are here to assist. If you have any questions please call us and we will be happy to guide you in making the best choice for your project.

QUALITY

The first number you see on a piece of foam is often referred to as Density. This is misleading. It actually indicates "Quality."

1.1 Is a lower quality value product used for crafting and some light use furniture projects.
1.8 is a medium quality foam. It is often used for upholstery projects often used in DIY projects. It is not the highest quality but professionals will sometimes use 1.8 for customers concerned about price or when the task does not require a higher end foam.
2.6 is referred to as "Forever foam." This is the foam most people select when investing in a project that they expect to last for many many years. This is the "blue foam" professionals use when hired to fix your favorite chair or couch.

FIRMNESS

Foam firmness is valuated through a test called Indentation Load Deflection (ILD), also known as Indentation Force Deflection. The numbers below indicate how much force or weight it would take to compress the foam by on inch.

10lb = ultra soft. Used for cushion backs, crafting and foam toppers. The firmer foams are used more when comfort and structural integrity are required
34lb = Medium firmness. This is often used for couch cushions, dining room chairs, lounge chairs and loveseats. This foam is also utilized in boat cushions and Often used interior boat seating such as v-berth cushions. 34# can be used for seat backs as well. For sleeping, 34# is the most firm I personally will enjoy.
45lb = Firm. This is a firm foam and predominantly used by the professionals . It promotes structural integrity so cushions do not sag or dip. This is often topped with a softer foam or batting to give a cushion a softer feel while offering support.
65lb = Extra firm. The name says it all. This is the foam you want when you need substantial structural integrity and a very firm foam. Your tush will know you are sitting on firm foam for sure.

DACRON ADD-ON

We are happy to install a dacron wrap to your foam for a small labor charge + the cost of the dacron fabric. This addition will make your cushions look "plump" and "full". However, the addition of Dacron means that we cannot ship the order vaccum packed and the total cost of shipping can get extreme. As an example, shipping five cushions that are 20x20x3 with dacorn from Maine to California could cost as much as $85. The dacron we use is 1 inch thick when uncompressed. When compressed under your cushion cover its closer to a 1/3 of an inch. If you add dacron to the top+bottom of a cushion it adds about 0.5-.07 inches of loft to the foam.
