couch cushion foam and dacron
Flat, lumpy sofa seats don't mean you need a new couch. With the right couch cushion foam and dacron, you can rebuild tired cushions so they look full, feel supportive and fit their covers neatly again. It's one of the most rewarding DIY upholstery projects, and it starts with choosing the right materials.
Why Foam and Dacron Work Together
Foam provides the structure and support, while dacron batting, a soft polyester fiber wrap, rounds the edges, fills out the cover and adds a plush, finished look. Wrapping foam also helps it slide into fabric covers more easily and can reduce wear on the inside of the upholstery.
What to Look For
Upholstery Foam
- Density: Higher density seat foam generally holds its shape longer on frequently used seats.
- Firmness: Choose softer foam for back cushions and firmer foam for seats.
- Thickness: Measure your existing cushion and cover to match the depth.
Dacron Batting
Look for a wrap that covers the top, bottom and front of the foam. A slightly oversized cushion core fills covers better than one that is too small.
